SCRIPTURE: Job 23:8-12
8 “But if I go to the east, he is not there;
if I go to the west, I do not find him.
9 When he is at work in the north, I do not see him;
when he turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of him.
10 But he knows the way that I take;
when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.
11 My feet have closely followed his steps;
I have kept to his way without turning aside.
12 I have not departed from the commands of his lips;
I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.
Job is in the midst of crisis in his life. He has lost everything he ever worked for that includes his cattle, shelter, and children. With God’s permission Job was allowed to be attacked by Satan. He was attacked emotionally by Satan taking away all his children, shelter, and cattle. He attacked him physically by inflicting sores all over his body from head to toe (Job 2:7). What I see in our passage is that Job cannot sense God but know he is there with him. He has a faithful outlook on things and knows that his faith will be strengthened by the things that he is currently suffering with. He has followed God closely and walked in the path of the Spirit and has kept fighting the good fight of faith. How has he done this after having a wife that that tells him to die, friends tell him that all this is happening to him because of his sin, losing all his children and cattle? He does it by not leaving his word and treasuring what God says above all else even, physical necessities such as daily bread.
The devotion by Job to God is simply amazing. No wonder God choose him to be tested the way he was. Job valued what he couldn’t see more than what he could see and that was a God who was faithful that he would trust no matter what the circumstances were. He wasn’t putting his faith in the circumstances but the God who destined them. He chooses his power source to be from his word and treasured that daily bread above all else. This is a challenge to us all to not “depart” from the commands of his lips. No matter what happens we can trust in God’s Sovereignty. Let’s never leave the shelter that is found beneath his wings. Whenever we have a fiery furnace experience let’s remember whatever he doesn’t pull us out of, that he has us there for a reason. To refine us. Let the maker mold you into the image of Christ.

Lord, let your will be done and not my own. Let me decrease and you increase in me. I want my greatest satisfaction to be in you. Let me remember when everything is stripped away, that you Jesus are enough for me. Lead me by the power of your Holy Spirit wherever you desire. I cling to your Word. The only essential for truly living. Let me die daily to my own word and what I think is best and hold fast to your wisdom and the beauty of your splendor.
